Who's who in digital Utrecht?

Digital culture and innovation is increasingly finding a home in Utrecht. On this page we map the many institutions that we have discovered in Utrecht since we founded SETUP.

 

Digital Culture

  • Born Digital
    A collective around digital visual culture. Founded by VJ's, they explore projection mapping.
     
  • Crossmedialab
    A lab that is part of the HU. Does projects on heritage and journalism, for example.
     
  • Deframe Collective
    A collective of visual artists.
     
  • Eindbaas
    A Chiptune music collective. They organise great parties, and are well known internationally.
     
  • Impakt
    Founded in 1988 Impakt explores digital art and theory through a festival, events, and an art residency.
     
  • IMG_SRC
    A collective of digital contemporary artists.
     
  • Maplab (Media And Performance Lab)
    Theater and technology are mixed at this HKU lab. Joris Weijdom is the man to talk to.
     
  • Random Data, the Utrecht hackerspace
    In recent years there has been a worldwide explosion of hackerspaces: collectives of digital creatives and ICT folk that enjoy taking apart technology. Talk to Barry, who also organises Hack In The Box.
     
  • Rotslab is a new initiative in Rotsoord, backed by Waag Society people. They are based in Das Spectrum, an art-space that often shows digital art.
     
  • z25.org
    A productionhouse for digital art, with a theatrical nudge.
     
  • Zesbaans
    A collective of digital artists.
     

Fablabs

  • Protospace
    A large fablab on the outskirts of Utrecht.
     
  • Minifablab
    A small fablab in the center of Utrecht. Focusses on lasercutters.

Education

  • HU
    At the 'practical university' of Utrecht studies like Journalism have become high-tech endeavours.
     
  • HKU
    Artschool with a large digital faculty. An important party in Utrecht, as a lot of digital creatives have studied here.
     
  • University of Utrecht
    The university had multiple relevant faculties. The ICT department offers AI, Programming and other practical technical studies. The humanities offers the awesome New Media and Digital Culture curriculum.

  • Fourcelabs
    A gamescompany that creates experimental and pervasive games.

  • Monobanda
    An internationally succesful games company that is recognised for their innovative use of new technologies. They are great at designing gameplay around tangible interfaces.

Workspaces

  • Dutch Game Garden
    Starting game companies can rent an office here, and will be supported in their quest for succes.
     
  • iGluu
    A relatively small flexworking space in the center of Utrecht
     
  • Seats 2 meet
    A conference center that rents out small meetingspaces, but also has a large central space where you can work for free. More business minded and social media related people can be found here.
     
  • VechtclubXL
    A space where creatives can rent workspaces.

    An underground (literally..) collective of people with a space in a wharf cellar. Talk to Angela.
     
  • Vechtclub
    A workspace and even a theater, all built from scratch in Utrecht Overvecht. Currently they are working on VechtclubXL, a co-working space.

    Explores urban renewal and intervention art.
